We have many Spring and Summer events coming up! We celebrate our seniors during their senior showcases. We have a year-end recital for all our students and we prepare for a summer full of lessons! Including our middle school musical theatre summer camp starting on July 14th. Check out this month's content!
Chatter...
“What you think about, you bring about.” “Get rid of stinkin’ thinkin’!” These are quotes that I’ve
heard many times in the business world. But how do they affect our world of music?
First, our brains believe what we tell them. Sometimes we speak to ourselves (either audibly or
inaudibly) or we say things to others about ourselves, that we would never imagine saying to or
about someone else. “I can never hit this note.” “I’ll never remember these lyrics.” “My fingers
just don’t move that fast.” “I can’t read music.” And the list goes on and on. And our brains are
so smart, they believe us!
So, what if we turned our language upside down and analyzed what happened specifically? For
example, we are singing a song, and we go flat on one of the notes. Rather than saying, that
was BAD, we could say, I hit 99% of the notes correctly and 1% incorrectly. Then we can
effectively examine what caused us to hit the one note incorrectly (possibly too little breath
energy or not allowing our voice to switch to a new coordination), and we can celebrate all that
we did correctly! That allows us the space to learn effectively and continue growing in our
journey.
In music, acting, and dance, we can easily get caught up in what is GOOD or BAD, RIGHT or
WRONG. However, sometimes what doesn’t work for one style is perfect for another. And
sometimes we miss one or two things, but that doesn’t make the whole thing BAD.
I can’t wait to hear the ways you will speak to yourselves as we go forward and see the growth
you’ll get to experience as a result!!!
